Pathways to Growth began as an online forum where private sector environment firms, governments, and other stakeholders could collaborate and brainstorm the development of an Action Plan for the growth of Canada's environment industry in the 21st century.

On February 12, 2002 Canada's Innovation Strategy was launched with the release of two documents: Achieving Excellence: Investing in People, Knowledge and Opportunity and Knowledge Matters: Skills and Learning for Canadians. The environment industry, recognized as a priority sector by the Government of Canada, was invited to contribute to the development of the Innovation Strategy.  Pathways to Growth established a starting point for these consultations and provided the groundwork to build the environment industry's response to Canada's Innovation Straregy.

This response is, of course, only of value if it leads to concrete action.  Therefore, the advice distilled from the input received during the consultative process has been transformed into a number of suggested action initiatives.  Pathways to Growth will continue to support the growth of this sector by providing a forum which will chronicle the action taken on these initiatives and report on their progress in facilitating the development of a more successful and innovative environment industry.
