Transport Canada

Transport Canada, like other federal departments, is required to prepare a sustainable development strategy (SDS) every three years.
Transport Canada is pleased to announce that we have begun the preparations for our 2007-2009 Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS).

The 2007-2009 Strategy provides an opportunity for Transport Canada to demonstrate continued federal leadership in promoting sustainable transportation. Sustainable transportation remains a departmental priority and Transport Canada looks forward to advancing sustainable transportation initiatives and to working with key partners where appropriate.

Transport Canada’s 2007-2009 SDS will be tabled in Parliament in December 2006. While this Strategy will build on the 2004-2006 SDS, goals for the 2007-2009 Strategy are to streamline the process and to focus on a smaller number of issues where the department can make a significant contribution. Three themes at the heart of sustainable transportation have been selected to focus our efforts: urban, freight and marine transportation.

The goal will be to present a results-based approach to achieving our long-term vision for sustainable transportation. The SDS will identify specific actions for the department to undertake to promote sustainable development within its policies, programs and operations.

Our 2007-2009 SDS will also address key federal environmental and sustainable development priorities, including clean air, clean water, clean land and climate change.

In preparation for our 2007-2009 Strategy, Transport Canada engaged selected experts and stakeholders to provide focused guidance in each of the three areas: marine transportation, urban transportation and freight transportation.

This consultation process took place through a series of three expert workshops, each specific to one of the three aforementioned themes. The purpose of the workshops was to assist Transport Canada in defining the challenges and identifying possible commitments for the 2007-2009 Sustainable Development Strategy.

Within each workshop, a rich assortment of experts gave exceptional presentations spanning a wide variety of topics according to each specific theme. These presentations fueled a basis for discussion that allowed the participants to actively discuss various opportunities, ideas, challenges and commitments to consider for the 2007-2009 Strategy.

With the multitude of information gathered from these successful workshops, Transport Canada is well equipped to move forward in the department’s process of developing and finalizing clear, focused and achievable commitments and targets.

To this end, please find below links to all of the SDS workshop presentations as well as the summary reports from each workshop. These presentations do not necessarily reflect Transport Canada’s viewpoint but were used to provide context and a starting point for the discussions. Please note that those presentations in English are the original documents from the authors, and the translations were provided by Transport Canada.

Current and Past Sustainable Development Strategies

On February 16, 2004, the department's third strategy - Sustainable Development Strategy 2004-2006 was tabled in Parliament. This third strategy brings more precision to the concept of sustainability, and defines seven challenges and 32 specific commitments for the next three years.

In the second strategy, Transport Canada adopted a set of sustainable development principles and made specific commitments to action.

The first strategy provided a sound foundation for integrating environmental considerations into the work of the department.
