Marine Safety's mandate encompasses the full spectrum of responsibilities related to Ship Safety and the protection of the environment, and provides marine expertise for general and policy matters.

The role of Marine Safety is to ensure the development, application and enforcement of legislation, regulations and safety standards for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of commercial ships, mobile offshore drilling units, air cushion vehicles, and other special purpose vessels. Marine Safety is also responsible for the qualification, training and examination of officers and crews of commercial vessels, prevention of ship source pollution, marine occupational health and safety issues pursuant to the Canada Shipping Act (CSA) and Labour Code, maintenance of a registry of Canadian ships, licensing of small commercial vessels, and overseeing pilotage matters (HQ).
