The regional office is located in New Westminster close to all main west coast rail yards and the district offices of the CPR, CN and BNSF railways. It is also centrally located for access to the many industry consignors and carriers of dangerous goods in the lower mainland and Fraser Valley areas of B.C.

Railway Safety contains two divisions: Operations & Equipment and Engineering. They are responsible, under the Railway Safety Act and Regulations for the monitoring of railway equipment, infrastructure, operating practices, signal systems and safety improvements to highway-railway grade crossings.

Transport Dangerous Goods promotes public safety and monitors compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations. They inspect consignors, consignees and carriers by road at handling sites (behind the gate) where cargo is loaded, unloaded or manufactured. They also monitor consignors, consignees and federally-regulated railways at handling sites and while in transport.
