APPOINTMENTS TO PACIFIC PILOTAGE AUTHORITY

OTTAWA - Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the appointments of Captain Andrew Allan Flotre of Vancouver and Kim Christensen of Langley, B.C., to the board of directors of the Pacific Pilotage Authority, effective August 28, 2001.

"The Pacific Pilotage Authority plays an important role in ensuring safe and effective pilotage services within Canadian waters in and around British Columbia," said Mr. Collenette. "Captain Flotre and Mr. Christensen bring a great deal of experience in shipping to the pilotage authority, and I am very pleased that they have agreed to serve on the board."

Captain Flotre received his master's licence from the Pacific Marine Training Institute in 1974. He has worked in the shipping industry since that time, most recently as President of B.C. Coast Pilots Ltd. Captain Flotre is a member of the Canadian Marine Pilots Association, the Canadian Merchants Service Guild and the International Marine Pilots Association, and is an active volunteer in the community.

Mr. Christensen graduated from an apprenticeship program at East Asiatic Company, Copenhagen, in 1972 and held various positions in that company following his apprenticeship. His most recent positions have been as operations manager of Greer Shipping Ltd. and general manager and chief operating officer of Pan Pacific Shipping Co./First Ocean Marine Ltd. Mr. Christensen is a member of various marine associations and committees and a former member of the Vancouver Board of Trade.

The Pacific Pilotage Authority is a Crown corporation created in 1972 under the Pilotage Act. It operates and maintains a safe, efficient and economical pilotage service in the coastal waters of British Columbia, including the Fraser River. The Authority sets pilotage charges that are fair and reasonable, and that allow the authority to operate on a self-sustaining financial basis.
