APPOINTMENT TO NORTH FRASER PORT AUTHORITY

OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the appointment of Sylvia J. Corning of Burnaby, B.C., to the board of directors of the North Fraser Port Authority, effective October 16, 2001.

Ms. Corning is president of project management for Sylco Services Ltd. and instructor of operations management, transportation and international trade at the B.C. Institute of Technology in Burnaby. She held various positions with Fletcher Challenge Canada Ltd. — a diversified multi–national company with Canadian forest operations. Ms. Corning is a member of the Canadian Association of Logistics Management, the Vancouver Transportation Club and a past member of the Vancouver Board of Trade. She previously served on the board of directors for the Fraser River Port Authority from 1999–2000 as an industry–appointed representative.

“Ms. Corning’s experience in business and community affairs will serve her well as she takes up her duties on the board of directors of the port authority,” said Mr. Collenette. “I am pleased that she has agreed to take on this responsibility as the federal representative on the board of the North Fraser Port Authority.”

The North Fraser Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established under the Canada Marine Act on July 1, 1999, to manage North Fraser Port. As a CPA, the North Fraser Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.

In 1999, the Port of North Fraser handled more than 3 million tonnes of cargo annually. Traffic includes raw woodfibre logs for processing at sawmills, aggregates such as sand and gravel, lumber, wood byproducts such as chips, sawdust and hogged fuel, steel and iron, and consumable goods.
