APPOINTMENT TO NANAIMO PORT AUTHORITY
OTTAWA Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the
appointment of Bryon E.W. Calverley of Nanaimo to the board of
directors of the Nanaimo Port Authority, effective October 16, 2001.
Mr. Calverley has experience in the lumber industry, most recently as a
general manager for Doman Forest Products Ltd. where his duties included
supervising the shipment of lumber to ports in the United States and Europe. He
was involved in the operations of seven sawmills and was responsible for over
750 employees. Mr. Calverley also received the B.C. Hydro Power Smart Award for
Best Design for his work as designer and supervisor in the construction of a $16
million plant in Chemainus, B.C.
"Mr. Calverley's extensive business experience will serve him well as he
takes up his duties on the board of directors of the port authority," said
Mr. Collenette. "I am pleased that he has agreed to take on this
responsibility."
The Nanaimo Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to
manage the Port of Nanaimo, effective July 1, 1999, under the Canada Marine
Act. As a CPA, the Nanaimo Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
Nanaimo is a major entry point for vehicle transportation and cargo on
Vancouver Island. In 2000, approximately 2 million vehicles and
5.8 million passengers moved through the port. Total cargo traffic in 2000
was nearly 2.1 million metric tonnes. The main imports were petroleum and
forest products, while the main exports were lumber, pulp and other related
forest products.
