TRANSPORT MINISTER ANNOUNCES
APPOINTMENT TO PRINCE RUPERT PORT AUTHORITY

OTTAWA — Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced the appointment of Mr. James E. Armitage of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

“Mr. Armitage’s expertise in strategic planning, sales and marketing and operational improvements are sure to be an asset to the board,” said Mr. Lapierre. “I’m very pleased that he has agreed to take on these new duties.”

Mr. Armitage holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario and a master’s degree in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in Stanford, California. He was the president and associate publisher of The London Free Press, president of Southam Metro Newspapers and a management consultant. He is currently senior vice-president, sales and marketing for Catalyst Paper Corporation, formerly NorskeCanada in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage the Port of Prince Rupert, effective May 1, 1999, under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the Prince Rupert Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.

The Port of Prince Rupert is the second largest deep-sea port on Canada’s West Coast and the deepest natural harbour in North America. With dedicated grain, coal, forest products, specialty grain and general cargo handling facilities, the port handles more than 4.2 million tonnes of cargo traffic annually. The port also has dedicated cruise passenger handling facilities.
