Experience the Colours of Island Fall

Prince Edward Island's blend of farm, forest and sea is unique by Maritimes terms. This landscape attracts visitors from across the globe, who come to enjoy the Island's scenery, hospitality, and way of life.

While many visitors focus on the summer months, more and more people are discovering the beauty of Prince Edward Island's Fall landscape. They have come to appreciate the colour of autumn leaves, the harvest of crops, the fragrance of clear, pure air, and the rhythm of a people in tune with the cycles of the seasons, the land, the forest, and the sea.

The forests of eastern North America are distinctive by world standards because of their brilliance and variety of fall colours and PEI's forests are no exception. On Island hills and ridges, sugar maple leaves turn vibrant apricot-orange and mix with the fiery scarlet-reds of red maple, cherry, and sumac. These reds and oranges are complimented by the brilliant yellows of poplar, birch and beech, and offset by the rich emerald greens of fragrant softwoods such as spruce, pine and fir.

The warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait have a moderating influence on PEI's climate and help to create one of the longest fall foliage viewing periods in northeastern North America. In most years, PEI offers many different fall foliage viewing opportunities from mid-September until late October. Foliage may be seen from the many walking and biking trails which cross PEI. Unpaved Heritage Roads which wind behind farm fields and forests to offer a vision of the Island's landscape from an older time, Prince Edward Island's forests are bear-free, providing year-round safety for visitors. As well, there are no deer or moose in Island forests, providing a safe viewing experience without large game hunting.
