Executive Council
HOME /
Executive Council is the executive branch of the government and decides on the policy
and direction which the government of the day will take. The Executive Council consists
of the Ministers of the Crown who advise the Lieutenant Governor.
Ministers are appointed to the Executive Council by the Lieutenant
Governor on the advice of the First Minister, who is leader of the political party having
the confidence of the Legislative Assembly. The Ministers
are usually appointed as heads of the various departments
of government, but it is not uncommon to appoint a Minister without Portfolio having no
specific departmental responsibility. The terms "Premier" and "Cabinet" are used in
popular speech to refer to the First Minister and the Executive Council.
The Executive Council Office provides staff support to
the Executive Council.
