Environment
The Environment Directorate has a broad mandate related to environmental management in the Yukon. The
Directorate is responsible for the Waste Management Program and the Northern Contaminants Program, which
involves the remediation of identified contaminated sites over the next ten years. It monitors and informs
the public on contaminants levels in country and traditional foods such as caribou, fish and wild berries.
The Directorate also works with the Government of Yukon toward the remediation of Type II Sites, which are
large-scale abandoned mine sites. There is also an Environmental Policy group and a unit responsibility
for coordinating federal responsibilities under the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment
Act (YESAA).
The current Director of Environment is Suzanne Bélanger-Fontaine.
