The Float Nurse provides nursing care and coordinates services for an assigned group of patients; assists the physician and other members of the health care team; provides supervision and direction in the area of team leading. The Float Nurse position is designed to provide experienced relief in response to emergencies and peak workload periods of the short term in critical care areas as well as medical surgical teams. Duties will include:
- assessing and anticipating the patient's needs through observation, interviewing of patient and/or family, and reviewing of available information;
- developing plan for the total care of each patient and continuously revising such plans in accordance with the patient's changing needs;
- coordinating the services provided by the participating members of the health care team, and in this respect functions as a patient advocate;
- monitoring, observing, and recording information relating to the patient's physical and psychological status to facilitative evaluation and modification of patient care and treatment;
- controlling and administering prescribed medications via various routes using professional expertise and judgement, according to Hospital policies;
- assessing learning needs and providing instruction to patients and their families in the areas of health and rehabilitative practices, lifestyle adaptation and self-care measures;
- initiating life-saving measures and responding to codes in emergency situations according to Hospital policy;
- promoting and assisting with the maintenance of a safe, clean and comfortable environment;
- readying patients, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing and explaining treatment and diagnostic procedures and assisting with examinations, interviews and assessments as required;
- coordinating and leading nursing and auxiliary staff activities related to the care and treatment of assigned patients and when designated as Team Leader;
- assisting in the education of nursing students and others by serving as a role model, demonstrating care and treatment techniques, and explaining routines;
- completing and maintaining designated hospital records and forms;
- attending and/or participating in programs to reinforce nursing education and to remain current with developments and changing trends in the nursing field;
- assisting with special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Nursing;
- promoting and demonstrating effective team-building skills throughout the Critical Care areas;
- other duties as required.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must be currently registered, or be eligible for registration, with the Association of Nurses of Prince Edward Island and be bilingual. Considerable experience in acute care and training in the field of coronary care, critical care and/or emergency nursing is required. The successful applicant will be expected to become certified in a suitable CNA programme and have considerable experience in acute care nursing, BCLS with an application of ACLS within two years of appointment. The successful applicant must have a good previous work and attendance record.
