Oct. 18, 2006 – NAV CANADA Operations Update

Do you fly in/around/through/over the Greater Toronto Area?  Are you aware of the types of airspace you are operating in?  Do you know what the correct procedures are that you should follow when you do so?  What services can you expect from air traffic control (based on the type of flight you are)?  What can you do to help NAV CANADA ensure that there is a smooth, orderly, safe and efficient traffic flow in and around the GTA?  What are some of the problems that NAV CANADA experiences with the mix of aircraft types, speeds and altitudes that they manage?  Come and find out!

Nov. 15, 2006 – Aircraft Icing – Flight Planning, Avoidance and Escape

Aircraft icing is a phenomenon that has plagued pilots since the birth of winter flying.  Its very local and seemingly random nature has caught many pilots off guard, sometimes with deadly consequences.  A new light has been shed on the topic within the last decade, which has given the aviation community a much better understanding of icing environments.  This presentation will focus on understanding the environments in which aircraft icing occurs, flight planning for its avoidance and escape techniques should an icing encounter occur.  Cases studies and video of actual icing encounters will demonstrate the dangers of flying in icing and drive home the message that "whenever you encounter icing, you should always start working to get out!"

Jan. 17, 2007 – Transport Canada Forum + The Aging Pilot

Join us this evening for open and frank discussions with the Mike Stephenson (the Regional Director Civil Aviation for the Ontario Region) and members of the Civil Aviation Management Team.  This panel discussion will be followed a very informative presentation on the Aging Pilot by Dr. Randy Knipping, Preventive and Aviation Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Canada.

Feb. 21, 2007 – The Hazards of Flight (from Departure to Arrival)

This seminar looks at the professional flight planning process and will include:  pre-flight planning (aircraft airworthiness, charts, weather and NOTAMS), start-up and departure planning (threat and error management during the take-off, departure and initial climb phases), en-route (airspace, weather and the "BIG" GPS hazards); arrival (threat and error management during approach and landing) and finally, taxi-in and shutdown.

Mar. 21, 2007 – Weather-wise + Pre-flight Walk-arounds

Weather is the most critical and complex variable that affects flying. But you don't have to be a meteorologist to understand weather or to make sound weather flight decisions. Being weather-wise — the ability to integrate official reports and forecasts with what's outside your cockpit — is a valuable skill. Wouldn't you like to be weather-wise?  Continuing on with the pre-flight preparations, System Safety’s Will Boles will then explain how to perform a walk-around of an aircraft from the maintenance perspective.  This is a good review for anyone who owns an aircraft or who rents an aircraft.  This presentation will help you become more aware of areas of concern for the aircraft prior to the wheels leaving the ground.  The aircraft will be covered from the spinner to the tail navigation light lens and from wingtip to wingtip.

Apr. 18, 2007 – Aircraft Ditching/Egress + Bird Strike Awareness

Do you fly over water? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you had to ditch? Do you believe that your survival chances when ditching a light aircraft are minimal?  Improve your odds of survival in a water-based aircraft incident.  Come and hear Brian Webster of Aviation Egress Systems provide information on submerged aircraft fuselage egress.  System Safety’s Terrence Satens will give a presentation on bird strike awareness.

May 16, 2007 – Summer Flight Preparations

The busy summer flying season is around the corner.  Join us for our final seminar of the 2006-2007 sessions for a general aviation flight training refresher.  Spruce up your rusty flying skills with a wide variety of tips, ideas, techniques and discussion from General Aviation’s Mark Dixon as we welcome him back once again for another informative presentation.  Learn what some of the problems/ weaknesses from the flight tests/exams are.  Review your aircraft performance (density altitude and runway length).  Hear what common points are regularly reviewed as de-briefing points from an industry flight training instructor and brush up on your take-offs and landings.  Ask questions in this interactive seminar!
