Developing a Business Plan Yourself
When Aboriginal Business Canada (ABC) requests that you prepare a business plan, your development officer can provide you with a detailed business planning guide. This will outline the information we require in your plan that is specific to your project.
There are also online resources you can use to complete your business plan. Some of these are available on our links page.
At a minimum, your plan should generally include the following sections.
- Project Description
- Describe the project you are proposing.
- Management Plan
- How do you plan to manage your business?
- What is your relevant management experience?
- Market Assessment
- Provide specific information and analysis of the industry in which your project will operate (i.e. regional, national, global market trends).
- What products and services do you intend to sell? To whom?
- How do you plan to price your products or services?
- What methods will you use to distribute your products and services?
- Who are your competitors? How will you compete with them?
- Marketing Plan
- How do you plan to promote your business?
- Operational Plan
- How do you plan to operate your business on a day-to-day basis, including purchasing, suppliers, manufacturing processes, human resources requirements, meeting federal, provincial or territorial government regulations, and so on?
- Financing Plan
- What is this proposed business project going to cost? How do you intend to finance it?
- Financial Projections
- You must submit financial projections for your business, for at least three years, if possible. These usually contain a monthly cash flow projection, projected income statements, projected balance sheets and projected sources and uses of funds statements. Include any assumptions made with respect to your financial projections. All revenue, sales and expense assumptions must be fully
supported.
- Appendix
- As applicable, the appendix should include supporting documents such as:
- Quotes/estimates from contractors
- Letters of support
- Letters of Intent
- Contracts
- Additional market/industry data
- Photos
- Plant locations/layout
- Resumes of key individuals on the project team
- Supplier lists
- Customer lists
- Product lists
- Financial agreements (for commercial loans)
- Copies of business licence, business insurance policies, business registration or incorporation papers
- Project management gant charts
- Promotional/marketing materials
- Bank statements
Include all information necessary to provide ABC with a full understanding of your business opportunity.
