PROVINCE LAUNCHES ROAD CAMERA SERVICE FOR TRAVELLERS

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI

Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea today announced the launch of a new tool for travellers on Island roads.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works has established a system of road cameras at six locations across Prince Edward Island. The purpose of the road cameras is to provide road and current weather conditions over the web for motorists as an additional resource to existing official weather and road condition information. The data from the road cameras will also assist staff in decision making for snow and ice control operations.

“Initiatives like this are another example of how we are incorporating technology into our daily business to help improve service delivery for the traveling public,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.

The new system of road cameras have been established at six locations across the province:

• In Elmsdale on Route 2 (Veterans Memorial Highway);

• At the intersection of Route 2 and the Blue Shank Road;

• At the Albany Y where Route 1 and Route 1A meet;

• On Route 1 in Bonshaw;

• On Route 2 just outside of St. Peter’s and;

• At the Poole’s Corner intersection where Routes 3 and 4 meet.

Visual images from the new road cameras can be accessed on the web at www.gov.pe.ca/tpwpei
