Churches on PEI

There are a number of churches representing several different denominations on Prince Edward Island. You may wish to attend a church service while here or simply explore some of the Island's historic churches.

Talented brothers William and Robert Harris left an indelible impact on the province; Robert with his fine paintings and portraits and architect William with his legacy of many important Island buildings including St. Paul's Anglican Church in Charlottetown, built in 1896, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Indian River. All Souls' Chapel at St. Peter's Cathedral, built in 1888, also displays some works of Robert Harris. The Chapel walls are occupied by 16 paintings by Robert Harris.

A stop to St. John's Presbyterian Church in Belfast is a must. This historic church was built in 1824 by the Lord Selkirk settlers who immigrated here because of the Highland Clearances in Scotland. The Church was built by Robert Jones, who immigrated here in 1809. The church design is distinctly Sir Christopher Wren.

Also be sure to visit the St. Simon and St. Jude Church in Tignish, where a magnificent pipe organ is still used, and the historic Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church in Cape Egmont.
