STEP-BY-STEP CHILD & FAMILY CENTER

Established in 1983 by a group of seven mothers who had preschoolers with challenging needs, Step-by-Step has evolved to service 130 preschoolers and their families. The new Step-by-Step facility located next to Karonhianónhnha School, is a 1,953 m2 facility which opened in September 2004. It was constructed at a cost of nearly $3 million, funded by a partnership that includes the ministère de l'Emploi, de la Solidarité sociale et de la Famille du Québec, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and the Step-by-Step Child and Family Center itself. It will provide services to children and their families in the areas of daycare, and general and specialized learning. Included in these services are a day care program; along with Junior Kindergarten students who are being prepared to enter into the public Kindergarten education program.

KATERI SCHOOL

Established in 1949 as a Federal school and later transferred under Band control to the Kahnawà:ke Education Center in 1988, Kateri School is the English primary and elementary community school with an enrollment of 305 students in a full-day bilingual Kindergarten and trilingual program from Grades 1 through Grade 6. Students are grouped in single-level and multi-age classrooms. By rehabilitating the existing Kateri School which was (2,965 m²) and adding an extension of (3,170 m²) so as to accommodate up to 170 more students, this addition added a new wing, additional classes and offices, a lunch and multipurpose room, a gymnasium, and a new office.

KARONHIANÓNHNHA SCHOOL

Established in 1964, the school was originally a Federal school and later transferred under Band control to the Kahnawà:ke Education Center in 1988. Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstàhkhwa is the aoskon Kanien'ké:ha immersion school with an enrollment of 201 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6 classes. The school also houses the Kanien'ké:ha Owén:na Otióhkwa (Mohawk Language) Curriculum Center which is responsible for developing and producing of all Kanien'ké:ha (Mohawk) materials used in all Kahnawà:ke Education Center community schools. With the demolition of the old facility, the new Karonhianónhnha School will be able to accommodate up to 256 students. The 3,500 m² will include 14 new elementary classes plus 4 preschool classrooms, a gymnasium, library, lunchroom, computer lab, resource rooms and storage and administration spaces. The new facility will be ready for 2005-2006 school year.
