NWT 2003-2004 Innovation and Knowledge Projects
Womens Employment Information Centre - Status of Women Council
of the NWT
A pilot Information Centre to expand northern womens participation
in the minerals and oil and gas sectors (training, employment or businesses
to serve the industry.) In addition to outreach activities with women
to create awareness of opportunities, the Centre will work with industry
and government to develop strategies and programs to address barriers
and increase participation.
Engagement of First Nations Women in Benefit Arrangements Related
to Resource Development - Native Womens Association of the NWT
Building womens capacity to advance their interests through impact
benefits agreements by researching best practices and barriers, and holding
a strategic planning and mentoring training workshop, followed by regional
workshops to train and engage women in policy change.
Accessing of Investment Dollars: Financing Options and Opportunities
- NWT Chamber of Commerce
Promoting information exchange between northern businesses seeking investment
dollars and financial institutions through: an investment marketplace,
a roundtable, an investment handbook, data bases of investors and investment
seekers, and a promotional campaign.
Dynamic Display of Research Information and Online Licensing Process
- Aurora Research Institute (Aurora College)
The main focus is digitizing data related to the scientific licensing
process (71% of which reflects oil and gas-related activities) and 1985-2001
research data, producing a CD ROM, and enhancing web delivery to allow
dynamic data driven and graphic (maps and graphs) views of data.
Alternative Energy Designs in Construction: Feasibility - NWT Metis
Nation
Related to construction of a multi-purpose building: a feasibility
study will look at options and design considerations for environmental
sustainability. After selection and construction, the demonstrated design
and construction techniques and technologies will be marketed.
E-Training & Tracking System: Water Laboratory Technicians - Aboriginal
Engineering Ltd. (Taiga Lab)
Development of a computer-based interactive self-study system will
increase hiring of Northerners, which has been limited by the availability
of skilled staff to carry out the training.
Petrogenesis of Rocks: Southern Wopmay Orogen Area, NWT - University
of B.C. and Memorial University
Supports technical work related to a study which will improve understanding
of key factors in generations of certain ore deposits. NWT Geoscience
Centre is a funding partner. Products will be a geochronology report,
the layering of an interim geology map and a digital map.
Age Analysis of Gold Mineralization at Con & Giant Mines - University
of Alberta
Analysis by a specialist in dating of rocks and mineralization deposits
will benefit understanding of other gold deposits in Slave Province.
Geochemical Surveys - Government of the NWT
Re-examination of approximately 5200 historical lake sedimentary samples,
which were collected by Natural Resources Canada, and analyzed for base-metal
potential, during the 1970s. Analysis of this material for gold, platinum,
and other elements is very cost-effective research.
Spatial Digitization: Optical Character Recognition - Government of
the NWT
Builds on past digitization projects by generating a spatial (map) database
of bulk chemistry of till samples, based on information contained in files.
This tool is potentially useful for diamond exploration, as well as exploration
for metals.
Gameti Community Mapping - Gameti First Nation
The community is partnering with the NWT Geoscience Centre to map local
geological information as well as provide training to a local person in
geological fieldwork.
INAC also supported the final stage of a project begun in 2003-2004 by
Chinook Aerospace (Thermal Energy Conversion).
