William Bennett Campbell

W. BENNETT CAMPBELL was born in Montague, P.E.I. August 27, 1943.
His early education was obtained at Poplar Point School. After elementary school, he attended St. Dunstan's High School and then on to St. Dunstan's University.
In September, 1962, he entered the teaching profession. He taught for a total of ten years; eight on Prince Edward Island and two in Montreal, Quebec.
Mr. Campbell was first elected to the Provincial Legislature on May 11, 1970. On October 10, 1972, he was appointed Minister of Education for Prince Edward Island.
In another election on April 29, 1974, Mr. Campbell was re-elected and re-appointed Minister of Education. In May, 1974, he was given another portfolio, this being Provincial Secretary for the Province.
With the resignation of the Minister of Finance in June, 1976, Mr. Campbell was appointed Acting Minister of Finance.
In November, 1976, Mr. Campbell was appointed Minister of Finance and dropped his Provincial Secretary portfolio.
On September 18, 1978, he was sworn in as Prince Edward Island's 24th Premier since Confederation, replacing Alex. B. Campbell, who resigned while in office.
On becoming Premier, W. Bennett Campbell retained the Finance portfolio and assumed the position of President of the Executive Council. His Education portfolio, and the Justice portfolio inherited from Alex B. Campbell, were assigned to other Ministers.
