Governors (1769-1873), Lieutenant Governors (1873-2002) and Administrators of St. John Island (1769-1799) and later
named (1799) Prince Edward Island
For the purpose of this report the term Governor appears for all Governors from the time of the creation
of the Colony in 1763 until Canada entered Confederation on July 1, 1873. Following July 1, 1873 all are identified as
Lieutenant Governor.
On 1 February 1799, by Royal Assent the name for St. John Island was officially changed to Prince Edward
Island by the Act for altering and changing the name of this Island, from St. John to that of Prince Edward Island which
was presented to the Council on 26 November 1798.
