This State of the Environment (SOE) Report for the Atlantic Region is the third in a series of reports, the first of which, Environmental Quality in the Atlantic Provinces, 1979, was published in 1980. The objective of SOE reporting is to increase the awareness of the public concerning environmental conditions and trends, to help them understand the relationship between human activities and environmental quality and the sustainability of ecosystems, and to provide a broad basis for improved decision making on environmental matters.
This report provides an overview of the environment of the Atlantic Provinces at a particular time. It also identifies problem areas and describes important conditions and trends, and outlines the direction in which the Region is headed environmentally. The central theme of this report is the relationship between human activities and environmental quality, human health and the economy. The concept of sustainability is explored, both in terms of ecosystem sustainability, and the long-term sustainability of our current use of the environment and its resources.
