Severe thunderstorms, wild winds, pelting rain, hail storms, flooding and even tornadoes... Massive snowfalls, dramatic ice storms or storm surges that ravage our coastal areas... No one ever really wants to think about this kind of weather. However severe weather is a harsh reality and can develop very quickly in the Atlantic region with devastating consequences for both human safety and personal property.

Fortunately meteorologists have a suite of tools at their disposal which helps them to better predict this wicked weather and thus give better and earlier warnings to the public. For example, state-of-the-art Doppler weather radars give weather forecasters more information on precipitation and wind speeds than ever before and help them to better predict severe weather.

A new Doppler weather radar was built in Gore, a community located about 50 kilometres north of Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the summer of 2001. It was officially commissioned on September 20th, 2001, replacing the former conventional weather radar located at the Halifax International Airport. The Gore Doppler weather radar provides coverage to all of mainland Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and the southern portion of New Brunswick. During the first fall of its operation, it detected the unique wind signature during Tropical Storm Karen's landfall near Liverpool on the morning of October 15, 2001, identifying a potential transitioning tropical system with signatures typical of both a tropical system and a mid-latitude storm.
