Atlantic Hurricane Season 2005 Outlook

On May 16, 2005 the United States National Weather Service issued a seasonal forecast for tropical storm activity for the Atlantic Ocean for the 2005 season. Their forecast called for 12 to 15 named tropical storms to form this year, 7 to 9 of which will become hurricanes. Of these hurricanes, 3 to 5 will reach the status of intense hurricanes (Categories 3 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale). Learn More...

Birds Oiled at Sea

Chronic oil pollution coming from ships traveling off Canada's coasts causes the death of hundreds of thousands of seabirds every year. An estimated 300,000 birds are killed every year off of Newfoundland's coast, and at least equivalent numbers may be dying annually on the Pacific coast, because of this illegal pollution. Three People Convicted Of Hunting Migratory Birds Illegally - Three men from South Western Nova Scotia have been convicted of illegal hunting over bait and possession of migratory birds in excess of allowable bag limits. News Release.

Remembering the 50 Year Anniversary of Hurricane Hazel - The Ocean Ranger Storm in 1982 was more intense (winds near 170 km/h). The August Hurricane of 1927 claimed more lives (at least 173). The Ice Storm of 1998 affected more people (over a million households lost power). The Edmonton tornado in 1987 was more sudden (less than an hour warning). Yet, no weather disaster has fixed itself more firmly in Canadian folklore than Hurricane Hazel's impact on Southern Ontario. Learn More...
