It Starts With an Idea Leaflet

Did you know?

  • Intellectual property (IP) is part of your everday life.
  • Inventions make cell phones work, designs make jeans look good, trade-marks identify your favourite drinks and copyrights protect the books you read.
  • Songs, movies, video games and websites are all protected by copyright.

These are all types of IP.

Think about it!

You listen to MP3s, take pictures with cell phones, carry portable computers and "chat" with friends on the web.

Technology is advancing as a result of creative people, people like you turning ideas into reality.

Imagine how you could change the world around you. From the classrooms of today come creators of tomorrow.

It's up to you! Your ability to create is limitless and the future is in your hands.

Protect your rights

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) helps inventors and creators protect their rights by granting patents and registering designs, trade-marks and copyrights.

This is proof that you own the IP rights which entitles you to stop people from copying your invention or creation.

This year CIPO is celebrating women's contributions to innovation. To learn more about IP and the World IP Day, CIPO's website is an excellent place to start!

The World Intellectual Property Day on April 26 is an opportunity for thinking.

Ideas shape our world. They are the raw materials on which our future prosperity and heritage depend. This is why it is important to provide environments in which innovative ideas are encouraged and rewarded. This is why intellectual property exists.
