Environmental Charges Laid In Connection With The Sinking Of The Sam Won Ho

St. John’s, NF -- January 5, 2001 -- Environment Canada officials today laid charges at the Provincial Court in Placentia under Section 36(3) of the federal Fisheries Act against Mr. David Walker and Mr. George Mitchium. The two men have been charged for their alleged involvement with the release of oil pollution into Long Harbour from the sinking of the freezer trawler Sam Won Ho on April 10, 1999.

An estimated 800 litres of oil was released into the ocean. Small amounts of oil continue to escape from the vessel which is still submerged at the wharf in Long Harbour. Under Section 36(3) of the federal Fisheries Act, it is an offense to deposit or to permit the deposition of a deleterious substance into water frequented by fish or into any place under any conditions where the substance may enter such water.

The first appearance for Mr. David Walker and Mr. George Mitchium is set for 10 am, Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at Provincial Court in Markland.
