FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WEATHER AWARENESS HELPS ATLANTIC CANADIANS PREPARE FOR DISASTERS
Halifax, May 8, 2001 - To launch Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week, the Government of Canada,
through Environment Canada and the Office of the Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness, has
partnered with provincial emergency measures organizations to make Atlantic Canadians more aware of the steps they
can take to prepare for weather-related disasters.
The arrival of summer brings with it the potential for severe weather which can endanger property and lives.
Hurricane Michael reached Newfoundland last summer and in 1999 at least two tornadoes and a number of flash floods
were recorded in the Atlantic region. Severe storms can strike unexpectedly, even with today's advance technology
used by meteorologists. It is vital that people know what to do in a weather emergency, in order to protect themselves
and their property.
Weather watches, advisories and warnings are issued by Environment Canada when there is developing weather
which may become threatening. If a severe weather warning is issued for your area, take action - secure loose
outdoor objects, close windows, garages and barn doors, and take shelter. If severe winds develop, go to a basement
or small interior room. Stay away from windows and avoid large open structures such as arenas, malls, gymnasiums
or barns.
Updated forecasts and weather safety tips are available on Environment Canada's website at http://www.atl.ec.gc.ca/weather,
by calling local telephone answering services, or by tuning in to radio and television stations. Weather safety tips
and information are also available on Environment Canada's website at http://www.ec.gc.ca/weath_e.html#storms.
