MINISTER ANDERSON ANNOUNCES $3.3 MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

More than $152,000 for projects in Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN– June 2, 2001 – Environment Minister David Anderson today announced $3.3 million in funding for 111 environmental projects in communities across Canada. In Prince Edward Island, 10 projects were approved for a total commitment of $152,984.

"This funding will assist in the development of local projects to reduce air and water pollution, and for the protection and rehabilitation of sensitive habitat crucial to the survival of species at risk," said Minister Anderson. "The projects will involve thousands of volunteers and participants from across Canada."

Minister Anderson made the announcement on the eve of Environment Week, when Canadians come together to celebrate the efforts, achievements and commitments of citizens who are working for a cleaner and healthier environment. A highlight of Environment Week is Clean Air Day on June 6th, when environmental activities focus on issues of air quality and climate change.

The funding comes from Environment Canada’s EcoAction Community Funding Program, an initiative created to help locally-based, non-profit organizations undertake projects resulting in cleaner air and water, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the protection of species at risk.

"These projects underscore the depth of commitment that Canadians have for the environment, and for the need to take an active and personal role in preserving it for future generations," said Minister Anderson. "I congratulate the successful local voluntary agencies from across the country, and wish them well with their efforts towards the protection of Canada’s natural resources."

The projects funded in this latest round mark a significant milestone in the history of the EcoAction program. Nationwide, over 1000 projects have now been approved through the program, representing an investment of over $30 million in communities across Canada.

To be eligible for EcoAction funding, projects must result in positive, measurable environmental benefits and build public awareness of priority environmental issues such as clean air, climate change, clean water and species at risk. These projects must also respond to community needs and obtain a minimum of 50 per cent in matching funding or in-kind support from other sponsors. Submission deadlines for the program are February 1st and October 1st of each year.

A list of projects funded under this round is attached. Further information on these projects, and on past EcoAction projects can be found at http://www.ec.gc.ca/ecoaction.
