NEW POLLUTION PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR NOVA SCOTIA BUSINESSES

DARTMOUTH, June 3, 2003 - The Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia today launched a one year pilot program to help small and medium-sized businesses develop pollution prevention plans to improve their environmental performance while increasing competitiveness.

“Small and medium sized businesses often don’t have access to the expertise that can help them become more environmentally friendly, and help their bottom line.” says the Honourable Robert Thibault, on behalf of the Government of Canada. “This program will provide them with practical advice that includes the most up-to-date information on pollution prevention. It is fitting that we announce this during Canadian Environment Week; it reminds us that we can all take action for the environment.”

The Eco-Efficiency Business Assistance Program offers assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises to reduce environmental risks and improve energy efficiency through pollution prevention activities. Targeted companies and associations will receive information on pollution prevention and its benefits. Interested companies can choose from a list of qualified consultants who will identify opportunities for energy efficiency and pollution prevention. Priority will be placed on the reduction of toxics, and on water and energy conservation. After the initial assessment, consultants will develop costs and benefits for the pollution prevention options.

“What is good for the environment is good for business,” said Ron Russell, Nova Scotia Minister of Environment and Labour. “This program shows that governments can work with the business community to enhance the environment. It’s especially gratifying that we are demonstrating this partnership during Environment Week.”

The program is sponsored by Environment Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the National Research Council (Industrial Research Assistance Program) and the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour. The Eco-Efficiency Centre in Dartmouth will manage the program.

The Eco-Efficiency Business Assistance Program will operate on a cost-shared basis. Businesses will contribute 25% of the cost of a qualified consultant and the program will contribute 75%. Maximum funding will be $6000 per business. At least 10 businesses will receive funding assistance.

The one-year $170,000 program is a pilot for a long-term initiative that could be delivered elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. It is similar to successful programs in Waterloo, Vancouver and Toronto.

In addition to supporting this project, ACOA is a contributor to the ongoing operations of the Eco-Efficiency Centre.
