The Manitoba Division is responsible for the delivery of the full range
of Environmental Protection Branch programs in Manitoba. It is also the
focal point for discussion and joint delivery of projects and programs
with provincial and other federal agencies.
Responsibilities include:
- co-ordination of Environment Canada's specialist information and
knowledge for the review of projects in Manitoba that are subject to
the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA)
- enforcement of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and
regulations
- enforcement of the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries
Act (FA) and regulations
- emergency preparedness and response, especially at federal facilities
as per "Canada - Manitoba Environmental
Accident Response Agreement" (currently under review)
- promotion or advice regarding compliance and pollution prevention,
as well as the delivery of other Environment Canada environmental initiatives
to the public and private sector, including government departments,
industry, and regulates
- participation in the delivery of many national programs, such as
the National Pollutant Release Inventory and the development of regulations)
- provide program secretariat support and expert advice for the Federal
Contaminated Sites Accelerated Action Plan through Interdepartmental
Regional Working Group (IRWG) activities in Prairie and Northern Region.
This includes the technical review of proposals, the support of consistency
in assessments and the provision of guidance and training to departments.
