BACKGROUNDER:

NOVA SCOTIA ECOACTION PROJECTS

Lunenburg County Climate Change Challenge
Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation
Lunenburg County
EcoAction contribution: $40,000

The Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation wants to implement a variety of climate change initiatives in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, in response to the call for all Canadians to reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne. Project activities include: an anti-idling campaign to have at least 10 areas designated as idle-free zones in the county; the promotion of car pooling and a walking school bus program at schools; the provision of simple and practical solutions of reducing personal greenhouse gas emissions through community workshops and presentations to schools and businesses; and encouraging residents to use more sustainable forms of transportation. Educational and promotional information on the project will be distributed at local festivals and events. By the completion of the project, the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation aims to have 250 households measuring and reporting back to them on their greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Cape Breton Climate Change Challenge
Atlantic Coastal Action Program - Cape Breton
Cape Breton Regional Municipality
EcoAction contribution: $30,000

Through this project, the Atlantic Coastal Action Program - Cape Breton (ACAP Cape Breton) wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from household energy use by changing the behaviours of homeowners in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Social marketing techniques will be used to provide families with the education, motivation, and behavioural reinforcement to decrease their home energy use by 20% in the following participating communities: Sydney, Glace Bay, New Waterford, and North Sydney. Each participant will receive a personal energy use assessment and an energy conservation strategy. A “how-to” manual will be produced at the completion of the project so other groups can implement similar initiatives in communities across Canada.

Meeting the One Tonne Challenge on Annapolis Farms Project
Clean Annapolis River Project
Annapolis River Watershed
EcoAction contribution: $41,000

The Clean Annapolis River Project wants to help build the capacity of the agricultural community in the Annapolis River watershed to meet the One Tonne Challenge. This project will allow the group to complete greenhouse gas emissions reviews on 10 farms, prepare individual reduction plans that include strategies and targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, identify funding opportunities for implementation measures, and begin the process of implementing reduction methods on participating farms. Information packages on climate change and farming related issues will be provided to participants.

Towards a Brighter Future
Clean Nova Scotia
South Shore District of the Southwest Regional School Board
EcoAction contribution: $51,000

Clean Nova Scotia wants to help schools across the province reduce their greenhouse gas emissions using a three phased approach. First, the organization will conduct a baseline study of the school boards in Nova Scotia to collect information regarding energy use, planning, knowledge, barriers, and potential for energy savings. Once this data is collected for the province it will be analyzed to develop an educational program that is tailored to behavioural change. The program will be measurable, save money, and reduce resource consumption. Finally, this program will be piloted at 80 percent of the schools making up the South Shore District of the Southwest Regional School Board. The long term goal of Clean Nova Scotia is to implement this program in all school boards across the province.

Total EcoAction commitment for Nova Scotia: $162,000
