The Remediation Technologies Program (RTP)
was started in 1990 and currently operates under Environment Canada's initiative, the
Great Lakes 2000 Cleanup Fund . This funding program was created in response
to the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement . This agreement commits
both countries to the virtual elimination of persistent toxic substances from the Great Lakes ecosystem.
The Goals of RTP are to:
- identify, demonstrate and evaluate innovative technologies which have both environmental and economical application in full-scale remediation projects in identified Areas of Concern (AOC) within the Great Lakes Region
- to provide the opportunity for Canadian companies to commercialize and market successful technologies globally.
Collaborative agreements are an integral
part of each demonstration project. Working closely with Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) and Public Advisory
Committees, financial and non-monetary contributions for past projects have come from Environment Canada's Great Lakes
2000 Cleanup Fund , provincial and municipal governments, and private corporations.
