St. John’s Company Charged for Alleged Jet Fuel Release

St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador- April 15, 2002- Environment Canada has filed charges against a St. John’s business for an alleged violation of the federal Fisheries Act. The charge was laid against Irving Aviation Services Limited as the result of an alleged release of jet fuel into a place where it was likely to enter waters frequented by fish.

It is alleged that on March 11th, 2001, an Irving Aviation Services Limited aircraft re-fueling truck released about 4000 litres of jet fuel on the property of St. John’s International Airport. Some of the released fuel spilled into Outer Cove Brook.

The federal Fisheries Act states that it is an offense to deposit or permit the deposit of a deleterious (harmful) substance into waters frequented by fish.

Representatives of the accused will appear at Provincial Court in St. John’s to enter a plea in relation to charge under Section 36(3) of the federal Fisheries Act on May 14th, 2002.
