How do I select more than one product from the search function in "Ice Conditions"?

To search for available products in "Ice Conditions", click on the left hand side of the page on the menu choice "Search". This permits you to search or query for a product or group of products.

In the "Search" page, several boxes should be displayed, which will allow you to specify the criteria such as: region, time period, format types, product category, product group and product types.

Here are two hints to assist you:

How can I order the Winter Ice Atlas and what format does it come in?

You can order a Winter Ice Atlas by calling, writing or e-mailing the Client Services unit within the Canadian Ice Service.(see contact us section)

The format for the Winter 2001 Annual Arctic Ice Atlas is a 16-page 9" x 12" publication with spiral binding.

This atlas is a mosaic of winter ice conditions, during a specific window of time, through the acquisition of RADARSAT images.

The information originates almost exclusively from a satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). SAR data from the RADARSAT satellite is captured by the receiving stations in Prince Albert (Saskatchewan), Gatineau (Quebec) and Fairbanks (Alaska). It also presents accompanying ice analyses of the mosaic imagery.

For several regions, the mosaic represents a composite of orbits from several days. All the RADARSAT data contained in the atlas is the property of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and subject to copyright ©CSA 2001. Most of the RADARSAT data was acquired by the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) and processed by RADARSAT International (RSI).

How can I print the charts off the Canadian Ice Service ice conditions page?

Netscape and Internet Explorer Web browsers are not capable of printing large maps or images to a single page. To print the charts in one page, you will need to use image editing software. If you are not using display options like PDF or MrSID, the following instructions apply.

First, right-click (<ctrl> + click for Macintosh users) on the image.
Select "Save As" from the menu which appears.
Save the image to your local hard disk.
Open the image file with the editing or publishing software and then print it.

However, if you are using PDF or MrSID, then printing can be achieved through the viewing interface. If you are using netscape, you can also click on "Print format" at the bottom of the page.

What are the different charges that can be incurred when ordering the CIS products?

Our web site presently has a section called Ice Services under which you can access our product and services catalogue. The associated charges can be found in the subscription section.

If you require custom products or services, please contact our Client Service representatives at cis-scg.client@ec.gc.ca. Once your requirements have been defined, we will gladly assist with the provision of the best information available; however, handling charges associated with your custom request will apply.

What are your hourly rates if I need a special consultation from your specialized staff?

Our labour rate for consultative services and custom data requests is $87 an hour plus GST.

What type of custom services do you offer when it comes to higher resolution images,...etc?

High resolution satellite images are generated from satellites which travel at lower altitudes and around the earth's poles for the most detailed coverage. Although these polar orbiting satellites provide higher resolution, they are available only as determined by the area covered on each orbit. Frequency of images is then tied to the frequency of the orbit over the same geographic region.

Our best source of high resolution images for the Canadian Ice Service is from RADARSAT Int'l. RADARSAT satellite images are used in our operational ice centre and are the basis of the ice charts we generate. So, in effect, our charts are the output from RADARSAT interpretation by our skilled staff.

However, if you, personally, require access to the copyright protected RADARSAT images, access charges apply. The copyright for these is owned by RADARSAT Int'l. Depending on the required coverage, cost per imagette starts at a minimum cost of $1200 per imagette. Full satellite images are more expensive. RadarSat Int'l can provide you with more information if you wish to subscribe on a regular basis or reach them directly from their web site http://www.rsi.ca

Due to our need to monitor ice in Canadian waters, the Canadian Ice Service does not acquire regular high resolution satellite images over mainland Canada for public distribution. For this kind of data, you can contact the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing at their web site: http://www.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca.
