The Canadian Ice Service Web site provides ice information products in graphic and text formats. You can view or print any of these products.

Viewing

Charts/Images
Our charts and images are in standard GIF and JPG formats. Often, our charts or maps are too large to view completely in your browser. For single-window viewing of our charts, you can use software viewers such as MrSID and Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download at no charge.

Bulletins
Our bulletins are in standard ASCII text format (.txt). You can view them using any text editor or word processor.

Printing

You can view our GIF and JPG charts using any Web browser; however, browser will not print our large maps or charts on a single page. You will need graphic software viewers to print the file on a single page.

For optimal printing functionality of ice charts and seasonal outlooks, we also provide our products in PDF format.

File Formats

To determine the types of files you wish to have returned in your query results, select the file formats on our Ice Conditions query page (File Format Types section) by check/unchecking the required boxes. Please note: by default all file formats are selected.

  1. .pdf

To view PDF files, use Adobe Acrobat Reader (available for free download at Adobe.com). Acrobat Reader provides zooming and panning options. It also provides quality print output of both our black-and-white and colour products.

  2. .gif or .jpg

You may also request our charts and images in GIF or JPEG format. This will provide you with quality products for viewing and printing, but you will need a software package on your PC to zoom, pan, and print.

  3. .png

In some cases, the PNG format may provide a superior on-screen viewing resolution, depending on your system. However please note, as above, that you will need a software package on your PC to zoom, pan, and print, and that not all our products are available in PNG format.
