Gazette Notice SMSE-012-05

Department of Industry

Radiocommunication Act

Notice No. SMSE-012-05 — Amendment to Radio Standards Specification 243 (RSS-243)

Notice is hereby given that Industry Canada is amending Radio Standards Specification 243, Issue 1, which establishes the requirements and measurement procedures for Medical Implant Communication System (MICS) devices which are implanted into the human body and used for transmitting data to facilitate diagnostic and therapeutic functions. The new issue is:

Radio Standards Specifications 243, Issue 2, Active Medical Implants Operating in the 402-405 MHz Bands (RSS-243)

Since the original publication of RSS-243, Issue 1 in 2004, the Department received requests to allow the operation of devices that did not meet specific requirements of the Standard. Therefore, RSS-243, Issue 1 was revised to include one-way devices that do not possess listen-before-talk and frequency agility capabilities. These devices, referred to as Medical Implant Telemetry System (MITS) devices, will be allowed to operate in Canada in the 403.5-403.8 MHz band.

The Department believes that opening a specific portion of the 402-405 MHz band for MITS devices will improve usage of the spectrum allocated for implanted medical devices. Furthermore, the Department is cognizant of the benefits that these devices provide to Canadians.

The above document will come into force as of the date of publication of this notice.
