Selectable Marker Genes

Selectable markers are gene sequences that are used in the lab to distinguish cells that have been successfully transformed. They are used in the early development stages of certain genetically modified products.

There are four categories of selectable markers, as follows:

  • Antibiotic Resistance Marker Genes
  • Herbicide Tolerant Marker Genes
  • Metabolic Marker Genes
  • Screenable Marker Genes

Selectable markers are used by the biotechnology industry in the research, development and production of genetically modified foods and plants, therapeutic and diagnostic products in health care and various other biotechnology applications.
