The roles of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in the area of aquatic of biotechnology are to: 

  • Provide coordination in the implementation, review, and evaluation of the DFO national science program in aquatic biotechnology.
  • Provide the scientific knowledge and expertise, and keep informed of leading-edge technologies in the area of aquatic biotechnology that will ensure the effective management and regulation of Canadian aquatic biotechnology products.
  • Provide program, policy and science-based advice on aquatic biotechnology to interdepartmental committees, international organizations, and Canadians.
  • Conduct and coordinate research, in collaboration with our colleagues at the federal and provincial level and with academia and stakeholders, to

I) further develop policies, strategies, and programs in the area of aquatic biotechnology to ensure the effective management and regulation of Canadian aquatic biotechnology products; and 

II) understand the potential benefits and risks of biotechnology to effectively use the techniques of biotechnology for the conservation and sustainable use of Canada's wild fish and for the benefit of the aquaculture industry.
