Canada's Youth Employment Strategy

NRCan Science and Technology Internship Program

Please note that due to the vast interest in this program, all of the internships for the 2006 year have been filled. Therefore, there is no funding available for any further internships for the 2006 year. Thank you to all who have contributed to the success of this program this year!

The Science and Technology Internship Program provides an opportunity to recent graduates in science or engineering to gain relevant and meaningful work experience. Potential interns are invited to work on natural resource sciences projects of commercial potential, in cooperation with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Activities may include all aspects of the innovation or technology process including bench level research, scale-up testing, pilot plant operations, analytical testing, calibration, technical documentation and field tests, work in the fields of geomatics and geology, as well environmental work in earth sciences, mining, forestry and energy.

Potential interns will work under the direction of experienced scientists on cutting edge research and development projects with NRCan partners committed to bringing research to commercial application. The intern is an employee of the partner. Partners include any company or universities who work in the fields of geomatics, geology, mining, forestry and energy. The federal government supports this program through active participation in the project and financial contributions from theYouth Employment Strategy initiative led by Human Resources Development Canada.

Internships start at any time throughout the year, based on project requirements and funding available. Fifty internships of up to one year in duration are available across Canada in each year of the program. The program began on April 1, 1997 and new programs under the Youth Employment Strategy have recently been renewed. Natural Resources Canada's Science and Technology Internship Program which is part of the Career Focus stream of the Youth Employment Strategy began April 1, 2003 and will be ongoing for the next five years.

NRCan is a participant in the Federal Government's Employment Equity initiatives, and is committed to having a workforce that is representative of the public we serve.
