![]() Welcome to the Clean Coal Technology Roadmap Website
|
![]() Many people have the perception that "Clean Coal" is an oxy-moron, however, we do have the technology to make this a reality. Coal-fired electricity generating plants can be retrofitted or built so that they produce low to zero emissions. |
LATEST NEWS ... August 22, 2006 Cleaning up coal's image Proper technology could make coal power the way to go: study Coal's dirty reputation may be getting a makeover. With the right technology, coal could be as clean as any other fossil fuel in terms of air quality, says James Sloan, the director of the Waterloo Centre for Atmospheric Sciences. Although other alternative technologies, such as microhydro, geothermal, solar, wind and biomass, are becoming available, one-fifth of Canada's current electricity generation comes from fossil fuels. We have over eight billion tonnes of proven coal reserves, storing more energy than all of our oil, natural gas and oil sands combined. Current technologies in use and under development to reduce emissions include sulphur dioxide scrubbers, low NOx burners and other techniques to reduce mercury, fine particulates and CO2 emissions in advanced pulverized coal fired power plants and Integrated Gasification Combustion Cycle Systems (IGCC) to name a few. By using these technologies industry is able to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, air toxics, and particulate matter. Currently the United States and Europe are using Clean Coal Technologies and here at home the Canadian Clean Power Coalition (www.canadiancleanpowercoalition.com) is llooking at the demonstration of new clean coal technologies. The first demonstration plant is planned to be in operation by 2010 that will be designed to remove CO2 and all other environmental emissions of concern. The Mission of the Clean Coal Roadmap: The Roadmap provides an outlook to the future and identifies technology pathways needed to allow coal to be used as a competitive environmentally clean energy resource for the production of electricity. The TRM is focused on identifying technologies and energy system pathways for power plant retrofits and mid term new construction; as well as technologies for the 2020 time frame where longer term development, infrastructure planning and implementation is required. |
