Shellfish Growing Area Classification IndexNOTICE: Use of the information on these pages is at the reader's own risk. The shellfish maps on this web site are intended for general information and are updated on a yearly basis. They are based on bacteriological contamination only and may be superseded by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Regulations. For the most up to date information and BEFORE HARVESTING SHELLFISH FROM ANY AREA, contact the nearest Department of Fisheries and Oceans office. The following maps illustrate the classification of shellfish growing areas throughout the Atlantic region. The maps are based on the 1:50000 National Topographic Series maps and most cover a 115 km² (9 x 13 km) area. They show the classification zones within the growing area; indicating approved, closed, and/or conditional harvesting. All maps are in .JPG format, approximately 1600x1000 image size, and file sizes are as indicated. Abbreviated Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) boundary coordinates for each area appear on the maps. The 4-digit coordinates are consistant with those described in Contaminated Fisheries Prohibition Orders issued by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and published in the Canada Gazette. The format of the 4 digits are equivalent to the 2nd through 5th digits in the UTM easting coordinate, and the 3rd through 6th digits in the northing. For example, if a boundary point has UTM coordinates of 20Z 456780E 5144350N, the coordinate pair that appears on the map would be 5678 4435. Note that the UTM zone does not appear on the map; most areas in the maritimes are in zone 20, though portions of the Atlantic Region fall in zones 19 through 22.
Selections may be made either by pointing-and-clicking on provincial maps, or selecting from lists. Note that the dates on the individual maps and in the indexes indicate when the most recent classifcation changes were efffective. All maps show the current bacteriological classification.
