Provincial Land Acquisition

The Government of Prince Edward Island acquires land from the general public for a number of reasons.

Road Purposes
The Public Highway system requires continual
maintenance and upgrades to meet ever changing demands
placed on it. To that end the Provincial Properties
Section is charged with acquiring the required lands for
highway construction purposes at the request of the
Capital Projects Division
managers of the public roads system. FAQ's

Public Works Projects
The Provincial Properties Section is charged with the acquisition of
lands for public works projects outside of the highway system at the
request of the
Public Works and Planning Division. These projects have included
schools, hospitals, and other Provincial infrastructure. These require the
acquisition of lands deemed necessary for the specific project at hand.

Resource Lands
Lands which may include areas with significant environmental sensitivity such as
shoreline's sand dunes, barrier ponds, old growth forests etc. Lands located
inside Provincial Forests, Wildlife Management Areas, significant wetlands and or
wildlife habitat.
The acquisition of these of lands is directed by the resource Department and or
Divisions whose mandate is to preserve protect and manage these types of property.
These include the
Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries,
Aquaculture and Forestry,
Forestry and Land Resource Modeling Division ,
Environment and Energy, Conservation and Management
Division ,
Tourism, Tourism Development Division.
