Our Partners
Canada's first air quality forecasting program began as a pilot project in the Saint John area in 1997. The program has since expanded and is now available in all four Atlantic Provinces. The forecasts are a joint effort of Environment Canada and the New Brunswick Department of the Environment & Local Government, the Nova Scotia Department of Environment & Labour, the Prince Edward Island Department of Environment and Energy, and the Newfoundland & Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation. The provincial Departments of the Environment provide air quality monitoring and data, while Environment Canada supplies weather information and produces and disseminates the air quality forecast. In addition, the Atlantic provincial Departments of Health provide information to educate the general population on health issues related to the deterioration of air quality and to inform concerned citizens on ways to minimize the adverse health impact. The Lung Association is also an active partner in promoting the program and making information available to the public about air quality and health issues.
The daily air quality forecast provides information about expected levels of ground-level ozone over the next 48 hours. Forecast values are given for the morning, afternoon, and evening of each of the two days in the forecast period, and expected pollution levels are expressed both as an approximate value on Environment Canada's air quality index (AQI) and as a general range (good, fair, poor, or very poor).
