Program Priorities

The Northern Ecosystem Initiative (NEI) was renewed for a second, five year mandate (Phase II) beginning April 2003. Under Phase II, NEI established Partner-Issue Tables to identify gaps in what is known, as well as in what is being done to address northern ecosystem concerns. Each Table is mandated to recommend priorities to be addressed and resource commitments to make within its particular issue area. Partner-Issue Tables have been established for each of the following program priorities:

• Climate Change
• Contaminants
• Monitoring
• Northern Quebec Steering Committee
• Resource Use Activities

In addition, all projects and activities supported by NEI must involve elements of capacity building.

The Tables' recommendations are reviewed by the NEI Steering Committee (Governance Structure).

National and International Commitments and Events

NEI partnerships and projects support Canadian efforts to meet national and international commitments including:
