Project History

Funded Projects

Background/History

The Northern Ecosystem Initiative (NEI) began in 1998 with the vision "to enhance the future health and sustainability of northern communities and the ecosystems on which they depend." During Phase I NEI supported some fifty projects across the Canadian North. In addition, under Phase I, NEI placed a high priority on partnership building in northern Quebec and Labrador.

Phase I projects were led by or involved partnerships with First Nations, Inuit Organizations, communities, universities, northern colleges and research institutes, non-governmental organizations, other government and international agencies.

In its second five-year mandate, NEI is building on Phase I accomplishments by adopting a targeted approach to project funding. This funding is critical to ensuring ecosystem health and community sustainability across the Canadian North.
