Monitoring

Available evidence suggests that northern ecosystems are undergoing detectable changes. However, the duration, geographic scope and ecological implications of these changes are not well understood at this time. Repeated observations will allow us to better monitor change and detect trends. It will also provide an early warning system that could trigger more specific research and conservation measures. The Northern Ecosystem Initiative (NEI) supports the development of a northern monitoring network.

The long term goal is to support the establishment of a monitoring network capable of providing status and trend information. The information should be simple to understand and easily accessible to northern communities, as well as planners, policy and decision-makers and the public in general.

A northern monitoring network should also be consistent with and supportive of Canada's commitments under the Arctic Council and other relevant international forums.

The current focus is on supporting existing monitoring projects or initiatives that:

  • Apply to a significant portion of northern Canada;
  • Apply to a significant portion of the resource under consideration;
  • Have a significant historical data record;
  • Have a secure funding base;
  • Support national and international commitments; and
  • Use standard protocols.

In the short-term, the Monitoring Table will place a high priority on:

  • Expanding the geographic coverage of existing monitoring projects or initiatives;
  • Expanding the scope or intensity of existing monitoring projects or initiatives; and
  • Making existing monitoring information and data more accessible to planners, policy and decision-makers, and northern residents.

In the long-term, the Monitoring Table will consider supporting projects that:

  • Lead to an inventory of indicators of ecosystem health;
  • Collectively address impacts of climate change on a full suite of northern ecosystems (forest, tundra, freshwater and oceans);
  • Contribute to the development of a Phase II NEI Report on Northern Canada's Ecosystem Health Status, based on identified ecosystem health indicators; and
  • Lead to the development and use of a consistent set of protocols for monitoring, reporting and data management.
