ECBC TO HOST LIABILITY INFORMATION WORKSHOPS ACROSS CAPE BRETON ISLAND

SYDNEY, N.S. -- There has been a strong response to proposed workshops providing Directors of not-for-profit organizations with information on their liability as it relates to the activities of their organization. As a result of this definite interest, Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation will host a series of workshops around Cape Breton Island facilitated by an experienced legal speaker.

The first workshop will be held on Thursday, October 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Nova Scotia Community College - Strait Campus (Nautical Institute). On Saturday, October 14 the workshop will move to the Belle Cote Community Centre from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 21 there will be a workshop at the Gaelic College, St. Ann's from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Delta Sydney. Locations are wheelchair accessible.

The speaker will be Frank Gillis, B.A., LLB. of McIntyre, Gillis & O'Leary, Barristers and Solicitors, Glace Bay. Mr. Gillis has extensive experience serving as legal counsel for boards in not-for-profit situations. As well, under the sponsorship of the Continuing Legal Education Society, he makes presentations dealing with directors’ liabilities to a variety of organizations.

"The response to our call for expressions of interest in these workshops was much stronger than we anticipated. Obviously this is an important subject for people and we are pleased to be able to provide this vital information to our volunteer community leaders," said ECBC Vice President Rick Beaton. "We also feel it is important to provide this service in communities across Cape Breton Island."

The approximately three hour workshop will include a break with refreshments and time for networking among the participants. There is no charge, but seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis, with pre-registration required. To register contact Marcie Shwery-Stanley at (902) 564-7876, toll free 1-800-705-3926 before Friday, October 6th. Those approximately 80 people who have already expressed an interest, by leaving their names and phone numbers, will be contacted for re-confirmation and choice of workshop location.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
