4EVERSPORTS WINNER OF 2002 ECBC TECHNOLOGY AWARD

SYDNEY, (N.S)
-- The winner of Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation's 2002 Most Innovative Application of Technology Award is 4everSports of Sydney. The annual award was presented to Robert Bobbett, Chief Executive Officer and Alan MacArthur, Chief Financial Officer by ECBC Vice President, Rick Beaton, during the Industrial Cape Breton Board of Trade Excellence in Business Awards Dinner held in Sydney on February 20.

The software development company developed and is promoting the TeePod Information System. The system uses a network of “TeePods”, small kiosk-type computer stations at each tee of a golf course. The weather-proof, touch-screen computer is attached to a wireless network and players simply touch the screen where indicated to add in a score or check their progress.

Golfers can also order food from the clubhouse to be delivered by the food cart directly to the hole or they can call for assistance in emergencies. Each kiosk also provides information on each hole such as how far it is to the flag, where the sand traps and other hazards are located, and how the hole should be played.

The software that runs the system was developed from an idea that grew during an eight-hour car trip two years ago involving Robert Bobbett, and brothers Allan and Brian MacArthur.

To test the product they developed, the company formed a strategic partnership with the Lingan Golf and Country Club which allowed 4everSports to install their customizable, real-time golf service and Internet-based information system. The success of this demonstration resulted in a two year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Lingan for the course to use the wireless system for another two years.

"We have been presenting this award since 1996 to companies that use technology and innovation to grow their business and benefit Cape Breton Island's economy," said Rick Beaton, Vice President, ECBC. "The technology developed by this year's recipients is an exciting new venture in the business side of the growing sport of golf. This company has the potential to market globally and export a developed-in-Cape Breton technology product."

"The development of our product has been an exciting and satisfying venture for our company and the support and encouragement received from ECBC has contributed to our growth and success," said Robert Bobbett, CEO, 4everSports.

The company's participation in the "Team Atlantic Canada" trade Mission to Atlanta, Georgia, last fall resulted in several important contacts. The group spent five days in the Atlanta area meeting with Golf Course Architects, Golf Distributors, Golf Course Management Companies, a golf editor and course operators.

The beta-testing of the TeePod system at Lingan resulted in an improved second version of the TeePod software scheduled for beta release in March 2002. The enhanced version of the product is much faster, more user friendly, and can be customized by the individual golfer from the Internet.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
