TOWN OF MULGRAVE SERVICING MARINE INDUSTRY WITH HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

MULGRAVE, N.S.
– The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) announced today, Government of Canada funding for construction of a 100,000 US gallon water tank to service the supply boats and marine industry using the Mulgrave Marine Terminal.

Currently, Mulgrave is servicing the offshore and marine industries by providing vessels with fresh water directly from the town’s system. When this happens, the pressure in the town system drops. The new water tank, which will enable the town to fill a supply boat more quickly, will also allow the town to supply water to more than one boat at a time. This will assist Mulgrave in developing its reputation as a supply base for the marine oil and gas industries.

Because of its strategic location, Mulgrave has seen an increase in activity related to the oil and gas industry and this growth has spawned new investment in infrastructure. The water tank project is another step toward meeting the demands of the marine industry in Mulgrave.

“The recently completed Gardiner Pinfold Study identifies an increased water main capacity as a priority infrastructure item to successfully establish Mulgrave as a supply base,” said MP for Bras d’Or-Cape Breton,
Rodger Cuzner. “In order for Mulgrave to be prepared for the growth expected in the oil and gas industry and the increases in shipping activity, the water tank is a must.”

“With the construction of a new water tank, comes the ability to be more competitive in the oil and gas industry,” said Leonard MacDonald, mayor of the Town of Mulgrave. “The funding from ECBC will help make it all possible.”

The total estimated cost of the project is $218,500. ECBC will make a $151,661 non-repayable contribution through ACOA’s Business Development Program.

The Town of Mulgrave, located on the western side of the Strait of Canso, has a long history attached to the sea and transportation. Mulgrave’s past is linked to the present and to the future through its marine connection.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs in Cape Breton and the Mulgrave area.
