History of Tropical Cyclones in Canada

Most tropical cyclones that impact Canada are either going through a post-tropical transition stage or are dissipating. Hurricane Hazel of 1954 is Canada’s most remembered "hurricane." It was a dying tropical cyclone that re-intensified rapidly. A new low centre formed farther north which is typical of mid-latitude system developments. 200 millimetres of rain fell in less than 24 hours. There were 81 deaths and over $100 million of damage near Toronto. The Great New England hurricane of 1938 was another post-tropical cyclone that was a close call for Canada. A tropical cyclone re-intensified after it met a frontal system. The storm transformed into an extratropical cyclone of hurricane intensity. In the US, there were 600 deaths and over $12 million in damage. The storm came close to Canada, but did not have the same devastating impacts as it did in the US.

A few tropical systems have reached the Maritimes while still classified as hurricanes. Hurricane Juan of 2003 is the most recent of these. The previous landfalling hurricane in Nova Scotia was Hurricane Gustav of 2002. The strongest hurricane to make landfall in Nova Scotia was an unnamed storm on August 22, 1893. This system went through St. Margaret’s Bay as a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

One of the greatest Bay of Fundy flooding events recorded in history was probably associated with a hurricane passage in the vicinity of the Bay. The Saxby Gale of 1869 had the highest storm surge ever recorded and flooding was extensive.
