Clean Air Science and Research
Scientists in the Air Quality Research Branch of the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) at Environment Canada study the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere. This research is focused on air quality issues, such as smog, acid rain, stratospheric ozone depletion and the resulting increase in ultraviolet radiation, the buildup of greenhouse gases, as well as hazardous air pollutants (e.g. mercury and pesticides). Activities carried out by the Branch include:
- Modelling;
- Systematic measurements; and
- Chemical and physical processes research
Government scientists frequently work with researchers in universities and other federal and provincial departments, as well as with experts in the private sector, on atmospheric issues of mutual interest. Where human or ecosystem health is affected by atmospheric conditions, cooperative work is also carried out with scientists in these fields.
